Srinagar, Oct 22: The Dryland Agriculture Research Station (DARS) at SKUAST-Kashmir, in collaboration with the Division of Agrometeorology, Faculty of Horticulture, inaugurated a six-week Entrepreneurship Skill Development Program (ESDP) at Khanda, District Budgam. Sponsored by the Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSME), the program is focused on Technology-Driven Climate-Resilient Farming Strategies and aims to empower 25 unemployed youth from the region.
The event began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Zahida, Senior Scientist at DARS, who emphasized the significance of the program in fostering climate resilience in agriculture. She underlined the importance of youth participation in such initiatives to drive sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth in Kashmir.
Following the welcome address, Dr. Hilal, Agriculture Extension Officer (AEO) of Khanda, provided an overview of the training, outlining the practical aspects of the six-week program. He stressed the role of extension services in bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and field application, particularly in the face of increasing climate variability.
Dr. Latief Ahmad, Scientist at DARS and Programme Coordinator of the MSME training, then delivered a detailed briefing on the program’s objectives. He discussed how the training has been specifically designed to impart practical skills in climate-smart farming techniques, with a strong emphasis on the use of emerging technologies like remote sensing, precision farming, and smart irrigation systems. “This initiative will not only equip the youth with the tools to tackle climate change challenges but also pave the way for sustainable agricultural practices that will benefit the entire region,” said Dr. Latief. He also elaborated on the role of agrometeorology in enhancing climate resilience and improving crop productivity in Kashmir.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shabeena Majid, Professor at DARS, who acknowledged the efforts of all organizers and participants. She also stressed the importance of technology-driven approaches in overcoming the challenges faced by the agricultural sector due to climate change. The program is expected to empower the participants with entrepreneurial skills, preparing them to contribute to the region’s agricultural growth by adopting climate-resilient farming practices.
