Srinagar, Sept 30: The Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board would be taking full control of Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST), as the varsity is the “baby of Waqf Board”, chairperson, Waqf, Dr Darakhshan Andrabi on Tuesday said.
“People of J&K must know that Islamic University of Science and Technology belongs to the Waqf Board. All the IUST affiliated colleges belong to Waqf,” Dr Andrabi told Rising Kashmir.
Giving further details, she said, around 200-250 Kanals of land on which IUST has been set up was donated by Wakf.
“But the then government played mischief by trying to keep Wakf Board out of the University affairs despite taking the former’s huge funds and property to set up the varsity at Awantipora,” she said.
Dr Andrabi said the Wakf donated Rs 44 crore when the IUST was set up. “But the government then for their vested interests kept the university out of Wakf control,” she said.
The IUST was promulgated by an Act of J&K State Legislative Assembly in November 2005. It is a member of All India University(AIU) and is recognised by UGC and AICTE. The Chief Minister is its Chancellor and its Board is the board of directors of J&K Muslim Wakf Board.
According to Islamic University of Science and Technology, Kashmir Act, 2005, the executive council is headed by the Vice Chancellor, who is the executive authority of the University.
Official sources told that the administration in the university was mulling some amendments in the present system which will be followed by establishment of University Council and syndicate.
