Srinagar, July 20: Although the Government has initiated the establishment of the Government Ayurvedic Medical College in Akhnoor, Jammu district, the hostel facilities for students are yet to be provided forcing the students to reside in private accommodations, as the construction of the hostel buildings remains incomplete.Speaking to Rising Kashmir, students from the college said that the construction of one hostel building commenced five years ago. They noted that only some minor works are pending for the completion of this hostel building.” Due to the lack of hostel facilities, students are forced to live in rented accommodations scattered across various locations in Jammu district. The college administration has not provided any hostel facilities to students,” the students said. They said that the scarcity of suitable rented accommodations in Akhnoor has compelled many students to secure housing 30 kilometers away from the college, resulting in a daily commute of 60 kilometers. This situation has become a significant issue, as students spend a considerable amount of time traveling between the college and their rented accommodations.”The college has also failed to provide any bus services for students, which would enable them to reach the college conveniently without relying on local bus services,” students added. One of the students said that due to the lack of adequate electricity supply, students are experiencing significant challenges during the heatwave, as the college has only installed fans failing to provide some relief from the heat wave conditions.”If the government would ensure a proper electricity supply to the college and install air conditioning facilities, students would find considerable relief while attending classes,” he said. The students appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Minister of Medical Education Sakina Ittoo to address their concerns and take necessary actions regarding their requests.Meanwhile, an official from the Government Ayurvedic Medical College Akhnoor said that funds have already been designated within the capital expenditure budget for the construction of the hostel buildings at the college. He said that the construction of the hostel will be completed promptly, allowing students to access hostel facilities at the college.”Constructing hostel buildings at the college is our top priority, however, we are also addressing the issues related to bus services, and necessary steps will be taken regarding this matter in a short period of time,” he said.
