Baramulla, July 19: In the aftermath of a brief spell of torrential rains that swept the valley on Wednesday, several localities in north Kashmir’s Sopore town of Baramulla district were left inundated, leaving the residents grappling with mounting problems.
Among the worst-affected areas were New Colony Sopore, Krankshivan Colony, and Neharpora, where the downpour wreaked havoc and caused distress for the people.
In Neharpora, rainwater seeped into residential properties, exacerbating the plight of the residents. “We have time and again pleaded with the administration to construct proper drainage systems in the area, but so far, nothing was done. Now, whenever it rains, we are forced to wear long boots to navigate through the waterlogged streets,” said Waseem Ahmad, a local.
The problem further intensified as the drainage water from nearby localities, including Noorbagh and Badambagh, found its way into Neharpora. “The lack of a proper outlet for this water resulted in its intrusion into our homes,” the locals said.
The situation was the same in Krankshivan Colony and New Colony Sopore.
Swiftly responding to the crisis, the local administration sprang into action, deploying motors to pump out the inundated water and provide relief to the affected areas.
However, the incident has raised alarm bells among the local population who fear potential calamities if the issue remains unaddressed.
The residents of the afflicted areas urged the administration to promptly intervene and find a lasting solution to the drainage woes before any further catastrophe befalls the region.
Apart from the immediate disruptions, there are fears of potential waterborne diseases arising due to the stagnant water in the localities.
