Srinagar, July 04:  Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) hosted the event ‘Reimagining Livestock & Fisheries with Future Ready Farmers: Vision 2030’ today. The event brought together policymakers, scientists, and farmers to chart a roadmap for sustainable development of Jammu & Kashmir’s animal husbandry and fisheries sectors. As per a statement issued, the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh graced the occasion as chief guest, reaffirming the Central Government’s commitment to transforming these vital sectors. The Minister announced comprehensive support for establishing dairy cooperatives and value-added processing units across J&K to benefit small and marginal farmers.
J&K Agriculture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar and senior officials from both central and UT administrations participated in the deliberations. The conference featured extensive farmer-scientist interactions and exhibitions showcasing SKUAST-K’s innovative research in animal sciences.
A significant highlight of the event was the naming and unveiling ceremony of ‘Tarmeeem’ – India’s first gene-edited sheep developed at SKUAST-K. This breakthrough achievement in genome editing technology positions India at the forefront of advanced livestock research.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai remarked, “From policy discussions to pathbreaking science, today’s event exemplifies SKUAST-K’s dual commitment to academic excellence and farmer welfare. Tarmeeem symbolizes our scientific capabilities to develop solutions for tomorrow’s agricultural challenges.”The university looks forward to continuing its collaborative efforts with farmers and policymakers to implement the Vision 2030 roadmap for sustainable livestock and fisheries development in the region, statement revealed.
