Srinagar, March 24: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday informed the Assembly that the construction of a one-lakh-gallon capacity overhead tank (OHT) in Natipora is currently underway and is expected to significantly enhance the water supply system across the Chanapora constituency in Srinagar.
The statement came in response to a question raised by MLA Chanapora Mushtaq Guroo, who sought clarity on whether the government plans to augment the drinking water supply in the constituency during the financial year 2025-26.
Responding to the query, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD) portfolio, outlined several measures aimed at strengthening the water supply infrastructure in the region. He stated: “The construction of the overhead tank at Natipora, with an estimated cost of Rs. 3.14 crore, is progressing as planned. Once completed, it will improve water storage and distribution across multiple areas, ensuring a more reliable supply for residents.”
The CM further highlighted that efforts are underway to upgrade the distribution network, including the laying of new GI pipelines in areas such as Nadir Gund, Post Office Lane, Umer Abad (Sector B), Gung Buk, Gulshan Abad (Hajam Mohalla), Magray Mohalla, Affindi Bagh Rawalpora, Astanpora Rawalpora, and Green Avenue (Sector 1), among others. Additionally, aging 80mm pipelines are being replaced in Barzulla, Mir Mohalla Old Barzulla, Umer Enclave Paraypora, and Hakeem Bagh Rawalpora to enhance service efficiency.
Apart from pipeline upgrades, the CM emphasized that the administration is focused on strengthening the overall water distribution network. Additional interconnections and pipeline installations are being implemented to ensure a more resilient and uninterrupted water supply system. A major initiative in this regard is the establishment of a 4 MGD Water Treatment Plant at Kralpora, which is expected to boost potable water supply across the entire constituency.
“A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been framed for the 4 MGD Water Treatment Plant at Kralpora, with an estimated cost of Rs. 28.59 crore,” the CM said. “Funding sources are being explored, and once operational, this facility will play a key role in enhancing water quality and availability for thousands of residents.”
