In a statement today, Waseem Yaqoob, State Spokesperson for the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, expressed grave concern over the persisting electricity crisis in Kashmir Valley, particularly during the winter season.

Yaqoob emphasized, “Electricity stands to be a jugular vein in every society, and the dire need for it intensifies during the winter days, especially in Kashmir Valley. Unfortunately, for decades, the Power Development Department has failed to take advanced measures to address the power crisis during winter, causing immense suffering to the poor consumers.”

Despite possessing a hydroelectric power potential exceeding 25,000 MWs, Yaqoob highlighted the inadequate production of only 3,500 MWs, urging accountability for this significant shortfall. He stated, “Someone has to take the responsibility for this alarming disparity between potential and actual production.”

Turning his attention to Srinagar city, Yaqoob pointed out the installation of smart meters throughout the city, yet the residents face 8-9 hours of unscheduled power cuts. He raised concerns about non-metered zones and other districts, painting a worrisome picture of the overall situation.

Yaqoob highlighted the critical impact on essential services, stating, “Hospitals are grappling with huge power lapses, and every household with a patient relying on electricity for oxygen faces severe challenges. Industries, both small and large, are in the midst of a crisis.”

In a direct appeal to the LG administration, Waseem Yaqoob requested urgent relief for the people and demanded accountability for the lack of preparedness. He questioned, “Why weren’t measures taken before winter to avoid these dire situations? It’s imperative that someone be held accountable for this oversight.”

The Democratic Progressive Azad Party calls for immediate action to ensure a regular and uninterrupted supply of electricity to alleviate the suffering of the people during these challenging times.
