Kulgam, Mar 02: Police in Kulgam said it arrested 42 drug peddlers in the first two months of the year in this south Kashmir district.
A police spokesperson said that during the months of January and February, Kulgam Police registered 34 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act cases, arrested 42 drug peddlers, and confiscated a large number of illicit drugs from their possession.
Meanwhile, police said that on Tuesday at around 1700 hours, after receiving information, a police party from Police Station Qazigund led by its SHO was constituted that laid a special Naka near Navyug Tunnel Qazigund.
“During the operation, a suspected person namely Tazeem Khurshid Mir, son of Khurshid Ahmad Mir, a resident of Mirdanter, Anantnag, was intercepted and illicit drugs were recovered from his possession,” the spokesperson said.
He said that during the search, 320 tablets/capsules of Spasmo-proxyvon Plus (Opioid) were seized, and the accused was promptly taken into custody.
In a similar incident, while patrolling in the Shurat village, a police team from Police Station Kulgam observed a suspicious individual, Hilal Ahmad Lone, son of Mohd Ramzan Lone, a resident of Hangir, Yaripora, who attempted to run after sighting the police party. “He was pursued and captured,” he said, adding that five grams of brown sugar-like illegal material were seized during his personal search.
Police said that both drug peddlers were booked under FIR No. 26/2023 U/S 8/21 NDPS Act and FIR No. 18/2023 U/S 8/21 NDPS and a case stands lodged at Police Station Qazigund and Police Station Kulgam, respectively, and further investigation is underway.
Police have requested the general public to come forward with any information regarding anti-social activity in their vicinities.
