Srinagar, Apr 19: Incessant rains have caused waterlogging in various parts of Srinagar capital city on Wednesday. The continuous downpour has left several low-lying areas, including HMT, Zainakote, and Bemina, submerged under water, creating a “deluge-like situation.”
The affected areas include Lal Chowk, Residency Road, MA Road, Munawarabad, Khanyar, BohriKadal, Hari Singh High Street, ZainaKadal, Khayam, Polo View, Rajbagh, Radio Colony, Jawahar Nagar, Mehjoor Nagar, Natipora, Naik Bagh, Chanapora, Bemina, Khomeini Chowk, Batamaloo, Tengpora, Ali Jan Road, and others.
The local residents have expressed their resentment, saying that the problem of waterlogging occurs every time it rains. They blamed the administration for neglecting to address the drainage issue that causes these localities to waterlog. The people of several areas of the city also reported that interior roads were in poor shape, with many potholes, which posed a threat to passengers.
Shopkeepers at Lal Chowk complained that ongoing construction work has hampered their business, and the waterlogging has added to their woes. The angry locals also expressed their disappointment with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for failing to contain the situation, despite a premature weather advisory issued by MeT.
In response, an official of Smart City Srinagar assured the residents that the city is under major renovation, and after the completion of the project, there will be no waterlogging or any other problems.
The situation has caused inconvenience to the pedestrians, and little movement was seen in various city markets, despite Eid approaching. The incessant rains have caused significant damage to the city’s infrastructure, and the residents are calling for immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future.
