Srinagar, Jan 04: Four soldiers died, and others sustained injuries after an army vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Saderkote Payeen area of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday.
An official told Rising Kashmir that a Road Opening Party (RoP) vehicle of 13 Rashtriya Rifles plunged nearly 500 feet into a gorge following which swift rescue operation was launched, and all six soldiers in the vehicle were evacuated. One soldier was taken to Sumbal Hospital, while the other five were shifted to District Hospital Bandipora, he said.
Medical Superintendent, District Hospital, Bandipora, Dr. Masarat Iqbal Wani said that two soldiers were brought dead to the hospital.
He added that three others sustained injuries and were given first aid before being referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment.
Dr. Wani further added that as soon as information regarding the accident was received, the quick response team, which had already been constituted, rushed to the spot and evacuated the injured soldiers. “Despite every possible effort, two soldiers succumbed to their injuries,” he expressed, extending his condolences.
A police official further confirmed that all six soldiers were subsequently moved to the 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar.
An Army spokesperson expressed deep regret over the loss of lives said that four soldiers succumbed to their injuries, and two injured soldiers are now in stable condition.
In an official post on platform “X,” the Army attributed the accident to inclement weather and poor visibility in the area.
The Army also acknowledged the prompt assistance of local residents in the rescue efforts. “We express our gratitude to the citizens for their immediate support and assistance in evacuating the injured,” the post read.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the tragic death of three army soldiers who lost their lives in a road accident in Bandipora district.
The unfortunate incident occurred when the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge near SK Payeen in Bandipora district of north Kashmir.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, offering his prayers for strength and solace during this difficult time.
He also prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and wished a speedy recovery to the soldiers injured in the accident.
