JAMMU, July 19: The water meters are likely to be installed in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir . The UT administration is actively considering the matter which is in final stages of progress, officials said.

Officials said that the water meters would first be installed in the major towns of J&K. “All modalities have almost been worked out for installation of water meters in J&K and these would be installed soon,” a senior officer of the PHE Department said, while wishing not to be named.

The decision to install water meters has been taken as per Government of India’s AMRUT Scheme, official sources informed.

The water meters are of the utmost requirement in J&K, especially in Jammu, to overcome the water shortage in peak season, official sources informed Rising Kashmir.

Officials said that there are numerous illegal connections in J&K and the water meters would help in identifying these.

The water meters would first be installed in commercial establishments in J&K and later these would be installed for domestic consumers.

Sources said that water meters would help to check water pilferage and also identifying illegal connections. They said that as of now, there are several illegal water connections that cause shortage and wastage of water.

The government has decided that one water connection will be given to a family of five persons. If family is more than five persons, it will have to get another water connection.

The water supply after installation of meters would continue round the clock. As of now, the piped water is being supplied for around an hour in each locality.
