The Jammu and Kashmir government on Thursday ruled out construction of massive buildings and hotels in the Bungus Valley in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, stating that it is committed to preserving the ecological sensitivity of the area.

In a response to a question of MLA Langate, Sheikh Khursheed, the Minister in charge of the Tourism Department, said that the government has focused on avoiding construction of massive buildings and hotels.

“Instead, the area is being developed as an eco-tourism destination, ensuring that tourism activities do not disrupt the valley’s pristine environment,” the minister said.

he said that the department is setting up basic recreation facilities, rain shelters, public conveniences, proper signages, lighting, and waste disposal facilities for visitors.

“To safeguard the livelihood of local shepherds, nomads, and other inhabitants of Bungus Valley, the government has initiated registration of paying guest houses in nearby areas, which not only provides an economic boost to local families but also helps in preserving and promoting the rich culture, traditions, and cuisine of the region,” he said.

The Minister informed that as of now, 19 paying guest houses have been registered with the tourism department in the vicinity of Bungus Valley—(KNO)
