Baramulla, Nov 06: In the picturesque town of Karhama Kunzer, nestled at the gateway to the breath-taking Gulmarg, a remarkable success story unfolded in the form of Tariq Ahmad Wani.
Tariq, who initially worked as a contractor in the sand industry, found himself at a crossroads as restrictions on illegal sand extraction from water bodies began to impact his livelihood significantly.
Dejected by the changing landscape of his profession, Tariq decided to explore new career opportunities to enhance the quality of life for his family.
After extensive deliberations with his peers, he made the life-changing decision to venture into sheep farming.
In 2021, Tariq Ahmad Wani approached the Department of Sheep Husbandry to establish a 125-ewe unit, securing 50% subsidy under the Integrated Sheep Development Scheme.
“I achieved remarkable success in just two short years. And I must thank the Animal husbandry department and LG administration for such schemes,” he added.
Today, Tariq stands as one of the leading livestock sellers, especially during Eid and various wedding festivities, with a livestock strength of 200 animals.
Tariq’s farm has earned a reputation for providing healthy livestock raised under scientific principles, making it a recognized brand in the region.
“I sought guidance from the Animal husbandry department in all aspects, from construction to feeding, breeding, and healthcare,” he told Rising Kashmir.
By following the department’s advice diligently, his livestock thrived, with impressive birth and weaning weights, ensuring the animals’ well-being.
With an annual turnover ranging from 8 to 10 lakh rupees, he not only improved his family’s standard of living but also created employment opportunities for four individuals at his farm.
Tariq’s story serves as an inspiration to the educated youth in the region, demonstrating that there are alternative career paths beyond government jobs.
He believes that while his early career in the sand industry provided decent earnings, the satisfaction and tranquillity he discovered through sheep farming were unparalleled.
“The essence of a halal livelihood and the noble profession of the prophets have transformed my life into a peaceful abode,” he further added.
In a message to youth, Tariq said that with dedication and passion, one can achieve great heights in any chosen profession.
