Srinagar, Oct13: Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) in Srinagar has added another feather to its successful journey after successfully conducting its first two cases of Kidney Transplantation on Thursday, the hospital authoritiessaid.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Jahangir Bakshi, confirmed the development to Rising Kashmir and said the start of a much-awaited health service is a big respite for patients and their families who are advised for the procedure.

“Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) associated with the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has launched the first of it’s kind ‘Kidney Transplant’ procedure, and on day one two procedures were performed”, Dr. Jahangir said.

Head of the Department for Urology Dr. Syed Sajad Nazir told Rising Kashmir that the much-awaited dream of starting a Kidney Transplant procedure at the valley’s Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) has finally come true after the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) approved the procedure by sanctioning necessary permissions and registrations.

“Efforts were being made to start the Kidney Transplant at SSH from the year 2016, and now that the dream has come true and people who are in need not to go outside the valley for treatment as that involved a huge amount of money and those in need of treatment can get the transplant here at home only, the day one recorded the two procedures and were successful”, Dr. Nazir said.

He said the new facility is equipped with the latest technologies meant during the surgical procedure and has allocated separate rooms equipped with ventilators for both donor and recipient where one specialist doctor and a nurse will be round the clock available for them.

He said that they got the necessary permissions and registrations last year in September from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) to start the kidney transplant procedures for which their principal at GMC extended the fullest support.

He said that for initial procedures they have tied up with ‘Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre’ in Mumbai, from which the team of doctors will be doing the procedures along with the in-house team of specialists.

“As per the health ministry guidelines, any hospital who wants to start the Renal transplant has to avail the service of concerned specialists from a health institution to start the Renal transplant procedures, and for that, we have roped In with ‘Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre’ Mumbai who will be doing few initial surgeries following which we will take over from them”, Dr. Syed Sajad Nazir said.

Dr. Nazir said starting the Renal Transplant service had been never easy for him as it took a long time for getting necessary registrations and permissions, saying that it involves a lot of scrutinies and comes with many riders as the procedure is connected with the organ transplant and organ donator.

“When it comes to the organ transplant, it is highly sensitive and the process for the procedure has to be smooth and without any malpractice, and to get it’s registration done it involved multiple inspections by the central authority from the MoHFW and once the required guidelines were in accordance with the requirements permission was granted”, Dr. Nazir added.

Highlighting the augmentation in his department at SSH, Dr. Nazir said initially they used to have one-day theatre when they started, and now that they are doing it for the whole week along with the referral-based OPD services, including the minor theatre for a whole week.

He added that both the recipient and donor who have to go through the procedure are covered under the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY package.
