Srinagar, Jul 04: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra on Friday welcomed the administration’s decision to seal a wine shop in Batamaloo, which had been temporarily relocated from Pantha Chowk to accommodate logistical needs of the ongoing Amarnath Yatra.
Karra termed the move a reflection of the administration’s “maturity and responsiveness” in acknowledging the public outcry against the outlet.
He said the decision was pivotal, as it recognised the legitimate concerns of local residents and traders who opposed the establishment of a liquor shop in the heart of a densely populated and commercially vibrant area.
“While the relocation from Pantha Chowk was driven by Yatra arrangements, shifting it to Batamaloo—an equally sensitive and largely teetotaling area—was deeply misplaced,” Karra said in a statement.
He said the religious and cultural sentiments of all communities must be respected with equal sincerity.
“Batamaloo, like many parts of Kashmir Valley, including the Pir Panjal and Chenab regions, comprises a population that overwhelmingly abstains from alcohol. Their sensitivities must be treated with the same seriousness and respect that led to the original closure in Pantha Chowk,” he said.
The J&K Congress chief further warned against normalising liquor outlets at a time when the region is already witnessing a disturbing rise in drug abuse among youth.
“This isn’t merely a matter of religious sentiment—it concerns the broader social and mental well-being of our society. By sealing the shop, the administration has acted wisely and in tune with public consciousness,” he said.
Karra urged the government to engage more carefully with local communities before making such decisions in the future.
