The Forest Department in South Kashmir marked Eid-ul-Fitr by distributing saplings to encourage the community to plant trees on the festive occasion, officials said.

According to Dr. Arshdeep Singh, Conservator of Forests for the Kashmir South Circle, the initiative was part of a green campaign to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr. The J&K Forest Department organized a special plant distribution drive across four districts—Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, and Shopian.

“As part of our commitment to environmental conservation, around 40,000 saplings were distributed by the Forest Divisions of South Circle, encouraging the public to contribute to a greener and healthier future. The drive culminated on March 31,” said the Conservator of Forests.

This initiative was widely appreciated, and a strong sense of enthusiasm was observed among the public during both the sapling distribution and plantation.

“The events held today focused on prominent locations and Eidgahs throughout South Kashmir. The participation was broad, with not only adults but also children, women, environmentalists, and community leaders joining in,” he said. “Locals were sensitized about the importance of tree plantation in combating climate change and promoting urban greenery.”

The Conservator added that this initiative aligns with the Forest Department’s vision of promoting afforestation and maintaining ecological balance.

He further said that Chief Conservator of Forests Kashmir, Irfan Rasool Wani, had appreciated the initiative on the occasion.
