Shopian, Jan11: The serene, snow-clad Dubjan meadow, nestled against the majestic Pir Panjal Range in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, came alive with vibrant festivities on the first day of the Heemal-Nagrai winter carnival. This two-day event, which kicked off on Saturday, offered a wide range of activities, including snow cricket, snow sculpting, cultural performances, snow sledging, snow riding, igloos, music, and singing, drawing a considerable number of visitors from across Kashmir.
The district administration ensured special arrangements were in place for visitors at this picturesque tourist destination along the historic Mughal Road, located just 8 kilometers from Shopian’s district headquarters.
The carnival was inaugurated by MLA Shopian, Shabir Ahmad Kullay, alongside Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shahid Saleem Dar and DIG South Kashmir, Javid Ahmad Matoo.
Deputy Commissioner Dar highlighted the challenges faced in organising the maiden carnival but expressed satisfaction with its success.
He noted the enthusiastic participation of people of all ages, who enjoyed the cultural performances and sports activities.
Dar emphasised that the event aimed to leverage the winter season to create income-generating opportunities for the local community.
“Dubjan is the nearest tourist destination to the city, only 8 kilometers from Shopian town,” he said, adding that the administration is working on connecting other tourist destinations and enhancing mobile connectivity in the area.
MLA Kullay lauded Dubjan’s enchanting beauty, asserting that it surpasses other popular tourist spots in Kashmir.
He announced plans for a similar carnival at Keller area of Shopian, in February, aiming to further explore and promote the region’s tourism potential.
