Srinagar, Dec 11: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Central Shalteng and J&K Congress president, Tariq Hameed Karra on Wednesday said fulfilling people’s aspirations is his foremost priority.
He inaugurated a vital drainage project in Beigh Mohalla, Allochi Bagh here. The project marks the first major development initiative in the area, which has been waiting for such improvements for years.
“This project reflects our commitment to ensuring better infrastructure and services for the people of the Central Shalteng constituency. Beigh Mohalla Allochi Bagh has been waiting for this progress for years, and I am honored to contribute to its development,” Karra said.
During his visit, he inspected the proposed site for a new marriage hall, engaging directly with residents to gather their concerns and suggestions. Expressing their gratitude, the residents of Beigh Mohalla commended Karra’s efforts and focus on developmental initiatives.
The J&K Congress chief criticised the unilateral decision to shift postpaid smart meters to prepaid mode without public consultation. He expressed concern over the potential hardships this would impose on low-income and underprivileged sections, particularly during harsh winters.
“The administration must ensure a stable power supply, avoid unreasonable hikes, and provide subsidies for those who can barely afford basic amenities,” he said.
Highlighting traffic chaos at Tengpora Bypass, Mominabad and surrounding areas, Karra urged the administration to revisit diversion plans that disrupt daily life and emergency services. “These unnecessary and prolonged diversions are creating hardships for commuters and emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades. A coordinated approach is essential to resolve this issue permanently,” he said.
Addressing flood concerns in Rambagh, Allochi Bagh, Tengpora, Batamaloo, Bemina and surrounding areas, the MLA criticised the mismanagement of a Rs 400 crore flood mitigation project approved during his tenure as an MP. “Subsequent administrations failed to implement the project effectively, and the funds remain unaccounted for. Immediate dredging and desilting are necessary to prevent disasters like the 2014 floods,” he said.
He proposed leveraging flood mitigation projects as an avenue for economic growth, suggesting that dredging and desilting activities could provide employment for skilled and unskilled workers. “The sale of excavated soil can generate revenue, creating a sustainable cycle of development,” he added.
Karra raised concerns about reports of officers bypassing elected representatives, stating, “In a democracy, officers are accountable to the elected government and must work in tandem with public representatives. Ignoring the voices of the people undermines trust and hampers development.”
He said elected representatives serve as the critical link between the government and the public, and their role must be respected to ensure effective governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
