The Old Jammu City, known for its long-standing issues with traffic congestion, is set for a major change as MLA Jammu East, Yudhvir Sethi, proposes a one-way traffic system to alleviate daily gridlocks.
A first-time legislator and resident of the Old City, Sethi has prioritised addressing the traffic chaos that has plagued the area for over three decades.
“During my campaign, the issue of traffic congestion was a common concern raised by residents in almost every part of the Old City,” Sethi said, adding, “I have prepared a comprehensive plan for streamlining traffic, which will be presented in the Assembly.”
The proposal focuses on implementing one-way traffic routes in key areas including Raghunath Bazar, Residency Road, Super Bazar, Purani Mandi, Gummat, Parade, Kanak Mandi, Jain Bazar, and Link Road, which are notorious for frequent traffic jams. These congestions worsen during the festive season, causing significant inconvenience to residents and visitors.
To further ease the traffic situation, Sethi has proposed creating new parking slots across the Old City.
“Establishing additional parking facilities will help manage traffic flow better,” he said.
Apart from traffic solutions, Sethi aims to promote religious and heritage tourism in Old Jammu City, home to historical sites such as Raghunath Temple, Mubarak Mandi complex, and Panjbakhtar Mandir. “We will work to ensure that at least 50% of Vaishno Devi and Amarnath pilgrims visit these historical sites, benefiting local shopkeepers and vendors,” he stated.
Sethi emphasised that boosting heritage tourism will be a key agenda during his term, as he seeks to revitalize the local economy and highlight the cultural significance of the Old City.
