Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday arrested two “self-styled journalists” for alleged extortion and blackmailing in Gund area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

A Police spokesperson said, “The Police Party led by PSI Jameel Ahmad of PS Gund under the supervision of SDPO Kangan Shri Muzaffar Jan-JKPS arrested Two Self Styled Fake Journalists for blackmailing/Extortion in the jurisdiction of PS Gund. The duo were identified as Sohail Maqbool S/O Mohd Maqbool Mir R/O Bamiluna Kangan & Kaiser Farooq S/O Farooq Ahmed Mir R/O Cheerwan Kangan.”

“Yesterday on 08-09-2023, a written complaint was received by PS Gund from one person namely Gulzar Ahmed Kasana S/O Abdul Rehman Kasana R/O Surfraw Gund stating therein that two unknown persons (Fake Journalists) arrived at his residence at surfraw and demanded a bribe of Rs.5000 from him”, he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the victim was constructing a residential house at Surfraw & the two self styled fake Journalists arrived on the spot and asked him to give Rs.5000. They took Rs.500 cash from him and asked him to pay remaining amount of RS. 4500 after two days. Further, the duo asked the victim if he failed to pay the said amount, then they will dismantle his house.

From many days there were complaints that some boys on scooty with mobiles and camera in hands are blackmailing/extorting public in general area of Gund. Many complainants have approached PS and have identified the duo for blackmailing them.

In this regard Case FIR No. 53/2023 under relevant sections of law stands registered at PS Gund and further investigation taken up. Ganderbal Police requests general public not to fall prey of blackmailing etc. & report such crimes to Police so that culprits shall be nabbed effectively under relevant sections of law in future also.
