Leh, March 4: In a remarkable display of efficiency and coordination, the Ladakh police, in collaboration with the UT Disaster Response Force (UTDRF), GREF (BRO), and the army, Tuesday rescued over 100 travellers stranded at Changla Pass due to severe weather conditions. The overnight operation ensured the safe evacuation of all individuals and the clearance of approximately 40-50 vehicles trapped in heavy snow.
According to officials, the crisis unfolded on March 3, when a tipper truck travelling from Kharu to Tangtse became immobilised due to heavy wind-driven snow near Changla Top. This obstruction triggered a chain reaction, leaving dozens of vehicles—both heavy and light—stranded on either side of the pass. With temperatures plummeting and conditions worsening, the situation became critical for the estimated 100-110 passengers, including elderly individuals and children.
Acting swiftly, the Ladakh Police, under the directives of W/DGP UT Ladakh Dr SD Singh Jamwal, IPS, mobilised rescue teams and resources. The operation was overseen by SSP Leh, Shruti Arora, and led on the ground by ASP Leh. Rescue and clearance efforts commenced at approximately 8:30 PM on 3 March, with teams working tirelessly on both sides of Changla Top to ensure the safe passage of vehicles and passengers.
By 2:30 AM on March 4, the Kharu to Tangtse route stretch was successfully reopened, with the last dumper truck removed from the road. Operations on the Tangtse side continued until 5:00 AM, ensuring that all stranded vehicles and passengers were accounted for. Despite the extreme conditions, the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams ensured that no casualties or injuries were reported. Ladakh police commended the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved and reaffirmed their commitment to public safety. They also urged commuters to avoid travelling in adverse weather and to carry anti-skid chains when crossing high-altitude passes such as Changla and Khardung La.
