Srinagar, Jan 26: Dr. Abdul Majid Ganai, a resident of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district was honoured with Jammu and Kashmir Government award on Republic Day.
Hailing from Garoora village of Bandipora, Dr Majid is Head of Psychiatry at SKIMS Medical College and Hospital Bemina, Srinagar. He was awarded the J&K Govt Award for Social Reforms and Empowerment on Republic Day.
Dr. Majid has worked in various forums, including conferences, media platforms, and educational institutions, addressing issues such as mental health stigma, drug addiction, late marriages, elderly neglect, and the impact on orphans and disadvantaged children. He has collaborated with NGOs to support underprivileged populations medically, psychologically, and socially.
In April 2024, he organized a National Conference on Social Psychiatry at SKIMS Medical College. In October 2024, he organized a National Addiction Conference with experts from India and abroad. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked on reducing stress and stigma and developed methods for addressing grief and loss.
Recently, Dr. Majid was awarded an international fellowship by the Indo Global Psychiatric Initiative (IGPI) during ANCIPS 2025 in Hyderabad. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Edinburgh and the Distinguished Fellowship of the American Psychiatric Association.
He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geriatric Mental Health, Honorary Secretary General of the Indian Association of Biological Psychiatry, and Executive Council Member of the Indian Psychiatric Society.
Dr. Majid has contributed to establishing the Advanced Centre for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment at SKIMS Medical College, Bemina. He is involved in research and outreach programs at local and national levels to promote mental health.
