Srinagar, Dec 14: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a subsidized helicopter service for the Jammu-Mendhar route in Poonch district, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity in remote areas.

This initiative aims to provide affordable air travel, facilitate emergency evacuations, and enhance accessibility to the Mendhar sector, particularly during the harsh winter months.

The decision follows a formal request by the Civil Aviation Department of Jammu and Kashmir to include the Jammu-Mendhar route as part of the existing subsidized helicopter service network.

Mohammad Aijaz, Administrative Secretary of the Civil Aviation Department, in a letter to the MHA, highlighted the urgent need for this service.

He emphasized that the residents of the border areas in the Mendhar sector face severe accessibility challenges, especially during winters, and require reliable transportation options.

The survey conducted by the Air Operator showed significant demand for this route, prompting the proposal to include Jammu-Mendhar as an additional option under the Jammu-Poonch-Mendhar network.

The new service will play a crucial role in connecting the remote region with urban centers, ensuring timely transportation for residents and emergency evacuations.

The MHA’s Joint Secretary, overseeing Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh Affairs, has approved the request, paving the way for implementation.

A senior official at Civil Aviation Department said that the subsidized helicopter service is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and promoting regional development in remote areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

“It is expected to provide significant relief to residents and boost overall accessibility to the border region,” he added.
