Girls vision for future: GMC Sgr celebrates International Day of the girl child

Srinagar, Oct 11: In recognition of International day of the Girl Child under the theme “Girls vision for future ,” the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar organized a comprehensive CME cum training session in the field practice area to educate and train the healthcare workers , anganwadi workers and participants from the community including mothers and adolescent girls, putting an emphasis on girl empowerment, their healthcare , education , amplifying their voices , action and leadership. The event was hosted at UPHC Nishat, Block Hazratbal.
The event was held under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal & Dean Government Medical college Srinagar and the leadership of Dr. S. Muhammad Salim Khan , HOD Community Medicine, Government Medical College Srinagar. The organising secretaries Dr. Kouser Sideeq, Dr. Sameena Yousuf and Dr Rifat Jan, Assistant Professors in the Department of Community Medicine, Government Medical College Srinagar coordinated the event while it was moderated by Dr Fara Shafi, Block Medical Officer, Hazratbal.
Key note address about the issues faced by girl child and need to address them was given by Prof. (Dr.) S. M. Salim Khan HOD Community Medicine. A guest lecture on the occasion was delivered by Dr. Tauseef Ahmad Bhat, a renowned social activist who is working extensively for girl child education and women empowerment. On International Day for Girl child Dr Touseef Ahmed stressed on the girl child. He emphasized “You are valued, You are worthy, You are empowered, You are the future”.
The program featured a comprehensive training session by Assistant Professors from the Department of Community Medicine which included introductory remarks about the issues among girls by Dr. Rifat Jan followed by sessions on sensitisation about Child sex abuse by Dr. Sameena Yousuf and Challenges faced by the Girl child by Dr. Kouser sideeq. A role play was presented by ASHAs of Block Hazratbal on the importance of girl child care. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Mymoona.
With the right support from the community the girls empowerment in terms of health , education and community status can be improved exponentially and such events can be beneficial for achieving this goal.
