JAMMU, June 23:A mysterious fire late this evening caused extensive damage to around 30 hutments near Jammu Railway Station, with the blaze swiftly spreading through the densely populated area.
However, there were no casualties reported in the fire that engulfed the hutment cluster, which comprises over 300 dwellings.
As per authorities, the fire originated from a nearby scrap godown, as confirmed by TehsildarBahu, RajuSamyal.
“The fire started from a scrap godown in close proximity to the hutments,” Samyal informed Rising Kashmir.
Upon receiving the alert, 30 to 40 fire tenders were promptly dispatched to the scene, successfully bringing the situation under control. The swift response from the Fire and Emergency Department averted a potential disaster and ensured the safety of residents.
“The administration evacuated people to safer locations,” stated the Tehsildar, noting that some affected individuals sought refuge with relatives.
The affected hutments housed Rohingya refugees along with laborers from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, all of whom have been displaced due to the fire.
