Baramulla, July 17: Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Dr Syed Sehrish Asgar on Monday directed the officials to adopt zero-tolerance against those involved in drug abuse, and ensure this north Kashmir district becomes a drug-free region.
Chairing the 9th meeting of the District Level Committee of Narcotics Coordination (NCORD) here at Dak Bungalow, the DC directed the officials to adopt a coordinated approach and ensure synergized efforts to make Baramulla a drug-free district.
She issued crucial directives to the concerned officers, calling for a complete ban on the sale of tobacco within a 200-meter radius of all educational institutions across the district.
“The move is aimed at creating a safe and healthy environment for students and shielding them from the perils of substance abuse,” she said.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Baramulla/Sopore, the Principal of Government Medical College Baramulla, the Programme Officer ICDS, SDMs, and other officials from relevant departments.
The participants evaluated the progress made by the concerned departments in implementing the control measures to tackle the drug menace in the district.
In-depth discussions took place on various aspects, including the prevalence of drug addiction, the areas of concern, the age group affected by drug abuse, hotspots of drug-related incidents, and the status of the drug rehabilitation center in Baramulla.
Highlighting the importance of collective efforts, the DC Baramulla emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together harmoniously to enhance the rehabilitation of individuals involved in drug abuse.
The Youth Services and Sports Department received a special mention, with Dr Sehrish urging them to actively engage youth clubs in activities aimed at eradicating the drug menace.
The DC Baramulla emphasized the significance of conducting extensive awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate young people about the hazards and detrimental effects of drug consumption. Such initiatives will sensitize the youth and empower them to make informed choices for a drug-free lifestyle, she added.
During the meeting, it was revealed that eight medical shops in the district had been sealed for violating government guidelines, while 170 kanals of poppy cultivation had been destroyed.
“58 FIRs were lodged against culprits during recent drug de-addiction drives,” the officials informed the meeting.
