Baramulla, Aug 10: Amidst the tumultuous tomato market due to erratic weather conditions across the nation, an inspirational woman agri-entrepreneur in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has emerged as a beacon of success for progressive farmers.

The efforts of Chasfeeda, a resident of Palhallan area of Pattan, have resulted in windfall gains, all the while contributing to stabilizing tomato prices in the area.

The unpredictable weather patterns across the country have wreaked havoc on tomato production, particularly affecting key tomato-producing states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. The repercussions were palpable even in the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, with tomato prices witnessing a significant surge.

Amidst this crisis, Chasfeeda’s three-and-a-half kanal farm in Palhallan became a source of solace and supply for the local populace. Her dedication and relentless toil bore fruit as her farm yielded an impressive 6 tonnes of tomatoes.

“An initial harvest of six quintals translated into an impressive income of Rs five lakh. With an equal amount of tomatoes yet to be harvested, the earnings are poised to ascend further,” she said.

While skyrocketing tomato prices burdened most of the Jammu and Kashmir region, Chasfeeda’s contribution has been pivotal in mitigating the issue.

Along with other local farmers, her entry into the market provided respite to consumers.

“Earlier the tomatoes were sold at a staggering rate of Rs 250 per kilogram, but now tomatoes are sold at Rs 130 per kilogram in the district Baramulla and other towns,” she said.

She attributes her success not only to hard work but also to intelligent marketing strategies and support of the government machinery. Her established presence in markets within Ladakh and Tanghdar has enabled her to cultivate a loyal customer base.

Despite holding a degree in political science, Chasfeeda’s commitment to the agricultural sector led her to shun conventional career paths in favor of farming. Bolstered by the support of the Department of Agriculture in Baramulla, she has transformed into a flourishing woman agri-entrepreneur.

“I am very much thankful to the Department of Agriculture Baramulla for their support and guidance time and again. Without their guidance, it would not have been made possible,” Chasfeeda said.
