Handwara, March 09: Police in the Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district are making people aware of medical avenues available for drug de-addiction. In this regard, seven medical community awareness camps have been held under the civic action program during the current year.
“Keeping the sensitivity of the drug addiction and its spread into account, the Handwara Police is on its toes to keep not only vigil on suspicious elements involved in drug peddling but also helping the masses in sort of making them aware while conducting medical community awareness camps so that this menace is rooted out of society,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Handwara Sheema Nabi Qasba told Rising Kashmir.
The SP said that police are holding free medical checkups available from specialized doctors to people from all far-off areas. She said besides raising awareness through different means, over seven camps were held under the civic action program this year.
“These programs are aimed at making people aware of medical avenues available for drug de-addiction in case someone in their family or vicinity is in need of medical help for de-addiction,” SP Handwara said.” It also helps to generate sensitization about the need to seek professional medical help to aid addicts in quitting drugs.”
She said that police act toughly against those involved in drug peddling. “We are booking drug peddlers under the NDPS Act. Preventive detention for repeat offenders has also been undertaken in several cases,” she said.
