Srinagar, June 21: In a significant boost to maternal and neonatal healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir, Paras Health Srinagar has inaugurated a dedicated mother and baby care Unit, featuring a fully operational 24×7 Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) — one of the most advanced in the Valley.

The five-bed NICU is equipped with high-frequency ventilators, CPAP systems, transport incubators, and portable life-support equipment, ensuring critical care for premature or medically vulnerable newborns. Staffed round-the-clock by neonatologists, paediatricians, and trained nursing personnel, the unit is designed to deliver evidence-based, individualised care.“This facility bridges a longstanding gap by offering advanced neonatal services locally, eliminating the need for families to seek urgent care outside the Valley,” said Dr Sajaad Ahmad Bhat, Consultant in Paediatrics and Neonatology.

Alongside neonatal care, the hospital offers comprehensive obstetric services, including high-risk pregnancy management, painless deliveries, and continuous monitoring from diagnosis through delivery and recovery. The integration ensures mother and child remain under coordinated supervision throughout.Dr Nazeefa, Consultant in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, said:“What distinguishes us is not just our infrastructure, but our 24/7 capacity to handle complex deliveries — even at night. We maintain specialist teams and functional labour rooms, which are rare among private hospitals in the region.”

Dr Waseem Yousuf, Paediatric Consultant, highlighted the importance of mother-infant proximity: “The NICU is designed so mothers and babies can stay close, which enhances outcomes. We follow global protocols tailored to newborns suffering from respiratory distress, infections, or prematurity.”

The hospital is further supported by NABH-accredited protocols, an in-house diagnostic lab, emergency surgical support, blood bank, ambulance services, ROP screening, lactation counselling, and well-baby clinics.Dr Murtaza Habib, Facility Director, noted that, “Our low neonatal mortality rate reflects our commitment to quality and timely intervention. We’re also expanding into oncology to address the rising burden of cancer in the region.”

Seema Vig, Zonal Director, added that Paras Health—operating eight centres across India—focuses on clinical excellence, accessibility, innovation and patient-first care, performing nearly 500 surgeries daily across its network. The launch event featured a walkthrough of the new facility, interactions with medical teams, and testimonies from families whose infants were successfully treated — showcasing the life-saving potential of local, high-quality neonatal care. With this launch, Paras Health Srinagar sets a new benchmark in maternal and newborn services in J&K.
