Jammu and Kashmir Police have made a crucial breakthrough in the investigation of a sexual assault involving a minor girl, who was six months pregnant at the time of reporting in Handwara.
The case had sent shockwaves through the community due to its sensitive nature and devastating outcome.
A Police spokesperson said that a case FIR No. 17/2025, registered on 06-05-2025 under relevant sections of law 64 BNS, 5(J)(II), and 6 of the POCSO Act was taken up for in-depth investigation.
Unfortunately the victim later attempted suicide by hanging at her home and was immediately shifted to SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, for medical treatment. Despite efforts, she succumbed.
During the course of investigation, several suspects were summoned for questioning. Through sustained investigation and comprehensive forensic analysis — particularly DNA profiling — one individual (name withheld) from Gulgam, Kupwara, was conclusively identified. The DNA report confirmed his involvement by establishing him as the biological father of the foetus.
