Srinagar, Feb 4: The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) on Tuesday detained five individuals for allegedly smuggling SIM cards into jails to facilitate communication for terrorists and narco-terror operatives in the region.
A police spokesperson confirmed the detentions, stating that the five individuals were involved in smuggling SIM cards for terror operatives.
The detained individuals come from various locations, including Dawoodpora in Anantnag, Qamarwari in Srinagar, Nathpora in Bandipora, Kaloosa in Bandipora, and Kursu Padshahibagh in Srinagar.
“Strict action will be taken against all those involved as the investigation into the larger network continues,” the spokesperson said.
The detentions are linked to FIR No. 06/2023, registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) at the Police Station CI-K.
“During the investigation of FIR No. 06/2023, which covers sections 153-A, 505, 121, and 120-B IPC, along with sections 13 and 39 of the UAPA, five individuals were detained for questioning regarding their involvement in a criminal conspiracy,” the spokesperson added.
The accused are believed to have been working in coordination with anti-national elements to procure, transport, and smuggle SIM cards into Central Jail, where they were used by inmates, including those linked to terrorism and narco-terrorism.
Earlier, CIK conducted searches inside Central Jail, which revealed that the suspects, in collaboration with some inmates, had facilitated the illegal procurement and transport of SIM cards.
