Srinagar, Jan 20 : Ahead of Republic Day celebrations, authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have intensified security measures, deploying additional personnel along highways and crucial roadways to thwart any untoward incident in the region, officials said.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha would preside over and take the salute at the main Republic Day function at MA Stadium in Jammu on January 26. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will be the chief guest at the event.
A senior police officer said that all arrangements have been finalized regarding 26 January celebrations. We are already on alert and want incident-free Republic Day celebrations in the Valley,” he said.
The official said that stringent security measures have been implemented around the venue to ensure the peaceful conduct of the event. Multiple checkpoints have been established, stretching from the main gate of Bakshi Stadium to the precise venue, he said.
“Both the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have heightened patrolling, intensified vehicle checks, and increased frisking at various sensitive locations in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley,” he added.
He said Jammu-Srinagar highway is under continuous surveillance, supported by digital monitoring and CCTV cameras strategically installed at key locations. These measures ensure thorough monitoring of movement and enhance situational awareness,” he said.
“The authorities have implemented a three-tier security system incorporating human intelligence and advanced technologies outside Bakshi Stadium, such as high-end drones and CCTV-equipped vehicles,” he said.
The officer said that makeshift bunkers have been established to manage visitors, while Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) have been directed to maintain heightened vigilance in their respective areas.
“The district-level security reviews, Road Opening Parties (ROPs), and intensified patrolling along highways and border villages form integral parts of the overall security plan,” he said.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, along with Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Anand Jain and other senior officials, reviewed the preparations for Republic Day celebrations in the region.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Div Com Ramesh Kumar said that all arrangements have been finalized, including security protocols, traffic management, seating arrangements, decorations, power and water supply, sanitation, medical facilities, convenient parking spaces, shuttle services for citizens, barricading, frisking points, and fire emergency measures.
“Rehearsals for the Republic Day parade will commence on Thursday, featuring armed forces contingents, school children, bands, and cultural troupes,” he said that comprehensive preparations to ensure a successful and seamless event.
On Saturday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, V. K Birdi led a comprehensive review meeting at Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir to assess the arrangements for the upcoming event.
He lauded the efforts of the police force and urged all officers to maintain a high level of alertness ahead of January 26 celebrations in the Valley.
“During the meeting, IGP Kashmir was briefed by the participating officers about the preparations put in place in connection with upcoming Republic Day celebrations. The officers also presented their detailed plans, highlighting measures to enhance security, protect public spaces, and facilitate the orderly conduct of the event.
