Ganderbal, Sept 18: National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah on Wednesday said that once the elections are completed and the new assembly is in place, the Lieutenant Governor will lose the authority to independently frame laws.
Addressing reporters here, Omar said, “After October 08, there will be no option for the LG to impose laws. The people will have their own elected representatives, and the assembly will hold more power.”
He said the Jamaat-e-Islami candidates, who are contesting as independents due to the ban on their party, could split votes.
The former CM expressed concern over the LG’s suggestion that they should be barred from competing in the elections. “Regardless of political differences, excluding individuals from contesting is not the correct way to address the issue,” he said.
Abdullah said that Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) president Engineer Rashid has left his doors open to support the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if required for government formation.
He warned voters to be vigilant and ensure that forces trying to divide the National Conference’s vote are kept at bay.
