Pulwama, Jan 25: In the battle against prostate-related ailments, Dr. Khalid Z. Masoodi, a distinguished scientist at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has introduced a ground-breaking futuristic functional food against Prostate Cancer and related health issues.
The invention, titled “Nutritional Herbal Extract And Its Method of Preparation,” has successfully secured a patent, marking Masoodi’s fourth and the university’s seventeenth patent awarded by the Patent Office, Government of India.
Dr. Khalid Z. Masoodi, a prominent figure at SKUAST-K, has long been recognized for his commitment to addressing critical health challenges through innovative agricultural solutions.
His latest achievement, “Magic Food Taxo,” demonstrates SKUAST-K’s visionary approach to science and a profound dedication to improving public health outcomes.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Dr. Khalid Zaffar Masoodi revealed that, under the drug discovery program at SKUAST-K funded generously by SERB, DST, Government of India, they designed a futuristic functional food scientifically and clinically proven to alleviate symptoms related to Prostate Cancer, BHP (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia)and LUTS (Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms).
He added that the nutraceutical contains molecules effective against improving prostate-related health as it directly targets the Androgen Receptor, a key gene in Prostate cancer progression.
Dr. Masoodi said that, under the drug discovery program, they screened around 400 medicinal herbs and underutilized crops of the Kashmir Valley.
“We were able to identify around 16 anti-cancer molecules against prostate cancer,” he said.
The biotechnologist added that five molecules were from underutilized edible sources consumed in Kashmir for many centuries, but over time their use has diminished.
“These herbs are superfoods that contain added health benefits. With a decrease in the consumption of these herbs and a drastic change in food habits, we are seeing an increased incidence of diseases and cancers,” he said.
Dr. Masoodi said that Magic Food resulted from meticulous research and an integration of cutting-edge nutritional science research using various biotechnological properties.
He added that the formulation is designed to be a powerful tool in resolving symptoms related to prostate cancer, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BHP), and Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), featuring a unique blend of bioactive compounds, antioxidants, and specific nutrients known for their anti-cancer properties.
Dr. Khalid Z. Masoodi informed that prostate-related issues are prevalent in aging men, with symptoms such as frequent urination, incontinence, painful urination, forceful urination, difficulty in emptying the bladder, and more.
He and his research team conducted rigorous scientific studies to validate the efficacy of Magic Food.
The positive outcomes of the research not only reinforce the potential impact of the functional food but also played a pivotal role in securing patents.
The patent rights recognize the novelty and inventiveness of Magic Food.
Dr. Masoodi expressed satisfaction after receiving a patent for this invention a day ago, mentioning that he has applied for 11 patents in his 9 years of service at SKUAST-K as an Assistant Professor, with four granted so far.
He hopes that the other patents will be granted soon.
Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-K Prof. Nazir A Ganai has congratulated him and his team of students for receiving the patent and wished him good luck for future endeavours.
