Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Nazir Gurezi has reiterated his commitment to securing an all-weather tunnel for Gurez, ensuring year-round connectivity with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir.
Residents of Gurez, a remote border valley, face significant challenges during winter, when heavy snowfall blocks the vital Razdan Pass, isolating them for nearly six months. Gurezi highlighted the severe impact of this isolation on the region’s access to essential services and economic opportunities.
“The people of Gurez suffer greatly each winter because of the snow, which leaves us cut off from basic supplies and urgent medical services,” said Gurezi. “An all-weather tunnel would bring relief not only to residents but also open doors for sustainable de-velopment, making it possible for Gurez to flourish like other regions of J&K.”
The proposed tunnel would provide uninterrupted transportation of goods and services throughout the year, overcoming the challenges posed by the harsh winter months. Gurez residents currently rely on costly and limited air transport during winter, making the tunnel the most practical solution for long-term connectivity.
Gurezi also noted the potential for Gurez’s tourism sector to grow with improved ac-cess. “Tourism is one of the most viable ways to uplift Gurez economically,” he said. “With a stable connection to the Kashmir Valley, tourists can visit Gurez throughout the year, instead of just during the summer. Our beautiful landscapes, peaceful environ-ment, and rich cultural heritage make Gurez an ideal destination for nature lovers, trek-kers, and those interested in rural tourism.”
Alongside the tunnel, Gurezi emphasized the need for a permanent power solution to meet the growing energy demands of the area. Frequent power outages, particularly during winter, have long been a concern for residents and businesses.
“We’re grateful for the grid connection, but a more permanent power supply system is essential for the future,” Gurezi said. “As tourism grows and our communities advance, a stable and uninterrupted power supply will improve living standards and foster local industry.”
The MLA expressed plans to work closely with state power development authorities to address these energy needs, while also promoting efforts to harness renewable ener-gy.
