Ganderbal, Jan 07: Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri Tuesday visited Sonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district to take stock of the preparations with regard to the prestigious Z-Morh tunnel, set to be inaugurated on January 26 by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Officials said that the ambitious project is all set to be e-inaugurated by the PM Modi on January 26, when nation would celebrate the Republic Day.
The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir was accompanied by DC Ganderbal Shyambir and other officials of the district administration.
Sources linked the visit of Divisional Commissioner to Sonamarg with the preparations for the much-awaited inauguration of the Z-Morh Tunnel.
“Yes, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir visited Sonmarg and sought feedback about the developmental projects,” a source, privy to the visit told Rising Kashmir.
Last week, the Deputy Commissioner of Ganderbal, along with the SDM Kangan and other officers, conducted an inspection of the Z-Morh Tunnel, further fuelling speculation about its imminent opening.
The Z-Morh Tunnel, a Rs 2400-crore project, is a game-changer for the region, ensuring year-round connectivity between Gagangeer and Sonamarg. Historically, the Sonamarg road remained closed during the harsh winter months due to heavy snowfall, isolating the region. With the tunnel now completed and equipped with modern amenities and safety features, it promises to boost tourism and enhance the region’s economic prospects.
Locals have expressed optimism about the project, noting that Sonamarg, renowned for its winter tourism, will benefit immensely from the tunnel. The all-weather connectivity is expected to attract more visitors for winter sports and other activities, providing a significant boost to the local economy. Initiated in July 2020, the Z-Morh Tunnel project in Ganderbal district reflects a significant investment by the central government, with a total cost of Rs 2,400 crores. The project is part of a broader initiative to improve road communication and ensure undisrupted access to key areas in Jammu and Kashmir.
