Anantnag, Dec 30: A video circulating on social media, showing rats on patient beds at MMABM Associated Hospital, GMC Anantnag, has sparked widespread criticism over the hospital’s management of inpatient services.
The incident has raised concerns about the comfort and safety of patients and attendants at the facility.
Sahil Ahmad, an attendant from Kulgam, shared videos with Rising Kashmir, alleging that rodents were seen roaming freely on patient beds and in the hospital wards. However, the authenticity of the videos could not be independently verified.
“I have been staying in the general ward for a few days, and every night, several rats roam around, causing discomfort and inconvenience to the patients,” Ahmad said. “It is surprising that such a basic issue has not been addressed. Catching rats should not be rocket science.”
Following public outrage, the Principal GMC Anantnag Prof Dr Rukhsana Najeeb addressed the media on Monday, and said that they are verifying the reports about rodents roaming in the ward.
“We have taken cognizance of the matter and formed a committee to investigate. The committee, headed by Dr. Zain, has been directed to submit its report within 24 hours,” she said.
The principal also said that a company contracted for rodent control services has been alerted. “We already have a contract in place, which is expiring soon. The company has assured us of immediate action to resolve the problem. When the new tender process begins, we will ensure better participation to select the best service provider.”
Emphasizing patient safety, the principal said, “We have instructed the entire administration, including health officers, the sanitation in-charge, the medical superintendent, and casualty officers, to take strict measures to prevent such incidents. Any negligence will be dealt with seriously.”
She added that food left in the wards often attracts rodents and urged attendants to cooperate in maintaining cleanliness.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety and comfort of patients. The administration is actively addressing this issue to prevent recurrence,” the principal assured.
