Winter season brings snow-related activities & increased tourist influx to Pir ki Gali

Srinagar, Feb 29: Located amidst the breathtaking Pir Panjal mountain range in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Pir ki Gali along the Mughal road in South Kashmir’s Shopian district has emerged as a captivating tourist destination, drawing thousands of visitors with its picturesque landscapes and rich historical significance.
Spanning an elevation of approximately 11,500 feet, Pir ki Gali offers mesmerizing panoramic views, making it a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Recognizing its immense potential, the Department of Tourism Kashmir is planning to enhance infrastructure and facilities to elevate Pir ki Gali into a premier tourist destination.
Accessible via the historic Mughal Road, Pir ki Gali boasts dense pine forests, snow-capped peaks, and meandering rivers, providing a stunning backdrop for visitors seeking tranquility and nature’s spectacle.
“For those seeking tranquility and nature’s spectacle , Pir ki Gali provides ample opportunities of enjoyment. This destination is perfect for those seeking to escape the chaos of urban life. It provides immense offbeat travel experiences and has of- late, gained recognition among adventure seekers and nature lovers.” Ghulam Muhammad , a local of the area said.
Among Pir ki Gali’s unique attractions is the centuries-old Naag Temple, dedicated to the serpent deity, which adds a cultural and spiritual dimension to the destination. Pilgrims and tourists are drawn to the temple’s intricate architecture and spiritual ambiance.
“Pir ki Gali stands as an amazing winter tourist destination. It welcomes you with its perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure. Whether you are a trekking enthusiast or love camping, or if you seek solace in the spiritual experience at the Naag Temple, Pir ki Gali has got all to offer for every traveler,” Gaurav Patel, a visitor from Ahmedabad Gujarat said.
During the winter season, Pir ki Gali transforms into a haven for adventure enthusiasts, offering snow trekking and other snow-related activities. The influx of tourists during this time adds vibrancy to the landscape.
Secretary of J&K Tourism, Yasha Mudgul said, “It is encouraging to see increasing tourist footfall at Pir Ki Gali. We are definitely considering further developing this site. We have plans, but plans have not been finalised yet. Once the plans are drafted and finalised we will share further details accordingly. As of now we have not finalised the plans.
Legend has it that Pir ki Gali was named after a saint, Sheikh Ahmed Karim, who lived here during the Mughal era. Owing to the shrine’s location, the destination attracts religious tourists in large numbers.
Aijaz Ahmad, an official from the Department of Tourism, emphasized the destination’s potential to attract millions of tourists annually, especially with further infrastructure development.
