Nestled within the serene coniferous forests of Chitternar in Bandipora district, approximately 59 kilometers from Srinagar, lies the Kashmir Forest Training School (KFTS).Established in 1911 during the tenure of W.H. Lovegrove, the Conservator of Forests for Jammu and Kashmir from 1907 to 1915, KFTS stands as one of India’s oldest forest training institutions. Its primary mission has been to impart foundational forestry education to in-service junior forest officers, ensuring the preservation and scientific management of the region’s rich forest resources.
The inception of KFTS was driven by the burgeoning need for trained subordinate staff capable of efficient forest protection and the effective implementation of various forestry plans and schemes. Initially, the school focused on training personnel in the ranks of Foresters, Deputy Foresters, Forest Guards, and Watchers. In its early years, the institution trained 12 Foresters annually over a nine-month period, a number that increased to 16 by 1942.With the acceleration of forestry development programs, especially during the second Five-Year Plan period, there arose a heightened demand for well-trained personnel to execute fieldwork.
Situated at a latitude of 34°25’53” N and a longitude of 74°39’25” E, at an elevation of 1,690 meters above sea level, KFTS offers an extensive view of the renowned Wular Lake.Its picturesque surroundings provide an ideal setting for forestry education, allowing trainees to immerse themselves in the natural environment they are being trained to conserve.
KFTS offers a comprehensive range of training programs tailored to various levels of forestry personnel.A one-year program designed for Foresters and Deputy Foresters, focusing on advanced forestry management techniques and leadership skills.
These include, a six-month course aimed at Forest Guards, emphasizing foundational forestry practices, legal frameworks, and field operations.
A four-month program for Class IV employees, introducing them to basic forestry concepts and departmental protocols.
One-week sessions intended to update existing staff on the latest developments in forestry practices and policies.
Practical training sessions for Foresters and Forest Guards on the utilization of modern technologies like GPS and GIS in forest management.
Web-based programs focusing on the diversity, management, and utilization of NTFPs in Jammu and Kashmir. These programs are meticulously designed to equip the frontline staff with the knowledge and skills necessary for the scientific management and conservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s diverse forest ecosystems.
The main school building, constructed in 1956 to replace the original wooden structure, continues to serve as the epicenter of learning.Over the years, the infrastructure has been upgraded to include modern classrooms, laboratories, and libraries, all aimed at providing a conducive learning environment. The campus also houses residential facilities for trainees, ensuring a holistic educational experience.
