Srinagar, July 15: Kashmir Art Emporium in Srinagar is currently hosting a captivating two-day bone carving exhibition aimed at fostering art and creativity in the region. Organized under the “Know Your Artisan” initiative by the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, the exhibition has attracted a spirited audience eager to witness the remarkable craftsmanship on display.
The highlight of the exhibition is the exceptional artwork of Srinagar native Aziz-ul-Rehman, who has taken an innovative approach to art by crafting jewellery from animal bones. Aziz’s unique creations have garnered significant attention and admiration from visitors, making his work the centrepiece of the exhibition.
Speaking at the event, Mehmood Ahmad Shah, the Director of Handicrafts and Handloom, emphasized the importance of such exhibitions in promoting art and supporting local artists. He praised Aziz’s talent and dedication, commending his efforts to bring forward the diverse art forms prevalent in Kashmir.
Aziz, a 22-year-old student at SKUAST-K, developed an interest in bone carving as a child. During the pandemic, a cleaning day sparked his passion for this art form once again, leading him to create an extensive collection ranging from intricately carved decorative pieces to functional items like pen stands and candles.
In an interview with Rising Kashmir, Aziz explained that the aim of the exhibition is to introduce people to the “quite unique and new” art form prevalent in Kashmir. He highlighted the abundance of waste bones resulting from widespread meat consumption in the region, which he utilizes to create his art. Aziz also expressed his gratitude for the support he received from his parents, who initially had reservations but later recognized his potential.
Aziz hopes to inspire young people to explore their creativity and pursue various artistic fields, emphasizing the potential not only for personal fulfilment but also for generating income. His journey in bone carving has been described as amazing and surprising, underscoring the power of passion and determination.
The bone carving exhibition in Srinagar promises to be a catalyst for artistic growth and appreciation in Kashmir, showcasing the region’s rich heritage and talent.
