Srinagar, Apr 22:Srinagar, the heart of Jammu and Kashmir, is poised to attain the prestigious title of “World Craft City” following a recent visit by a jury team from the “World Craft Council International,” which has lauded the city’s rich craftsmanship, raising hopes for official recognition.
The coveted title would position Srinagar among the global elite, celebrated for their exceptional artisanal traditions.
The jury team, comprising experts from the World Craft Council International, concluded their three-day visit to Kashmir on April 18, meticulously evaluating Srinagar’s suitability for the esteemed designation. Their assessment involved a comprehensive examination of the city’s craft heritage, vibrancy, and dedication to preserving traditional skills.
Professor Yogesh, a representative of the World Craft Council and a member of the jury team, shared insights with Rising Kashmir, expressing profound admiration for the city’s craftsmanship. He remarked on the active involvement of numerous families in traditional crafts, underscoring the enduring vitality of artistic traditions in Srinagar.
Despite this, Yogesh acknowledged challenges faced by artisans, emphasizing the importance of striking a balance between traditional skills and contemporary market demands. He encouraged artisans to embrace modern applications while preserving the essence of Kashmiri craft, noting the potential for creating a substantial market that benefits both artisans and their craft.
Highlighting the need for innovation, Yogesh emphasized the importance of presenting traditional crafts in modern contexts to access broader markets and unlock new opportunities for talented creators.
Moreover, Yogesh revealed that the World Craft Council is contemplating marking its 60th anniversary in Kashmir, potentially attracting delegates from 180 member countries to experience firsthand the rich tapestry of Kashmir’s crafts.
The jury’s favorable assessment and the potential designation of Srinagar as a “World Craft City” not only validate the city’s artisanal heritage but also signify a significant milestone in its cultural legacy.
