Srinagar, May 01: National Conference (NC) president, Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday chaired a one-day convention of the party’s trade union leaders and workers on the occasion of International Labour Day at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha.
Provincial President Kashmir, Advocate Showkat Mir also addressed the gathering on the occasion. The convention was organised by the Convenor of the party’s trade union wing, G N Tailbali, the party said in a statement.
Emphasising the party’s dedication to upholding the rights and dignity of the working class, Dr Farooq said the government led by Omar Abdullah is committed to addressing the concerns of contractual employees. These concerns include lower wages, lack of benefits, job insecurity, and the potential for exploitation, he said, acknowledging the hard work of workers in both the organised and unorganised sectors.
The NC chief emphasised the importance of recognising the indigenous struggles of our own people at Zaldagar and the silk factory, which are often overlooked on International Labour Day. “The history of political struggle in Jammu & Kashmir has been shaped by the sacrifices of the working classes, particularly during the Zaldagar and Silk factory agitations. It is crucial for us as a community to remember the sacrifices made by these martyrs,” he said.
The former chief minister said the NC remains dedicated to the welfare of all working classes, as outlined in the Naya Kashmir manifesto. We stand in solidarity with various groups of workers, including daily wagers, seasonal labourers, ASHAs under NHM, Anganwadi workers, Mid-Day Meal workers, CPWs, MGNREGA employees, contractual workers, construction workers, and artisans, he said.
“Omar Abdullah-led government is resolutely working towards resolving their genuine concerns,” Farooq said, adding, “The working classes are not alone in their struggle – the NC stands with them and will continue to champion their cause.”
