Experts have expressed concern over the misuse of antibiotics in the valley especially during winters. Many individuals engage in self-medication and consume antibiotics on their own without proper consultation. To discuss the risk associated with misuse of antibiotics, Dr. Bashir Ahmad, HoD Microbiology, SKIMS Soura had a one-on-one conversation with Rising Kashmir’s Reporter, Umar Raina.

RK: How can people protect themselves from common cold and cough during harsh winters?

Dr. Bashir: The colder days can be quite challenging due to the drop in temperature. To stay healthy, people should focus on using warm drinking water and wearing appropriate warm clothing. Staying hydrated and keeping the body warm are key to preventing winter-related ailments.

RK: With the onset of winter, cold, cough, fever, and influenza-like viral infections become common. However, many people resort to using antibiotics without consulting a doctor?

Dr. Bashir: That’s a very important concern. Before taking any medication, especially antibiotics, it’s essential to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, and their misuse can lead to harmful consequences. People must always consult a doctor for proper diagnosis before starting any treatment. If a person has symptoms like cold, cough, or fever, they should undergo tests to determine whether the infection is viral or bacterial. Antibiotics will not work for viral infections. If it is confirmed to be bacterial, then antibiotics, whether in the form of tablets or injections, may be used, but strictly under a doctor’s guidance.

RK: What are the risks associated with excessive use of antibiotics?

Dr. Bashir: Excessive use of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, which is a growing global concern. When resistance develops, antibiotics become ineffective against bacterial infections, making treatment more challenging. Therefore, antibiotics should be used only when prescribed by a doctor after proper evaluation.

RK: Is vaccination effective during the winter season?

Dr. Bashir: Yes, vaccines are highly effective and recommended. They can help prevent conditions like cold, cough, fever, and allergies during the winter season. People should consider getting vaccinated, especially if they are vulnerable to infections.
