Week-long Skill Workshop concludes at GCW M.A. Road

Srinagar, Nov 23: The week-long National Skill Development Workshop concluded at Govt. College for Women, M.A. Road, Srinagar. The workshop was jointly organized by the college’s Department of Home Science and Hostel Management Committee.
Prof. (Dr.) Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, Director Extension SKAUST (K), was the Chief Guest for the valedictory session of the workshop while Principal of the host college, Prof. (Dr.) Ruhi Jan Kanth was the Guest of Honor.
The Chief Guest congratulated the college for conducting the workshop on a relevant theme. He also spoke about the importance of entrepreneurship and appreciated the efforts of the organizing team for imparting knowledge of different skills among the students.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal of the host college, Prof. (Dr.) Ruhi Jan Kant referred to the importance accorded to skill development in NEP-2020. She reiterated the college’s commitment to contribute constructively towards the national ‘Skill India’ initiative.
Various products made during the workshop were exhibited on the concluding day. These included: tie and dye dupattas, mixed vegetable pickle, garlic jam, quince jam, quince murraba, apple jam, glass painting and coaster art. The participants were felicitated with certificates at the end of the event and the formal vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Sumaira Shafi.
Prof. (Dr.) Poonam Sharma, who is a working in the Division of Food tech SKAUST-K, deliberated upon the processing of walnut kernel and entrepreneurship skills associated with this field. Ms. Ebrah, Trainer with Fevicryl Pidilite India, demonstrated the techniques of glass painting and coaster making.
Dr. Tariq Ahmad Mir, senior Assistant Professor at Institute of Hotel Management, delivered a talk on “Skills in Hotel Management.” Dr. Tanveer and Ms. Sumeira Baba of Home Science department, demonstrated three methods of Tie and Dye: Rouching, Marbling and circular design. Dr. Quarazah, a junior Scientist at Division of Food Science and Technology (SKUAST-K) demonstrated the processing and preservation techniques of Apple jam and Quince Murabah.
Dr. Shiva Dhar, Principal Scientist at Division of Agronomy (ICAR) emphasized on Rural and Urban Waste Management skill and its scope for entrepreneurship development. The speaker gave an account of different technologies of vermi-composting.
Rahul Tirpude, Deputy Director Design at IIP Mumbai, delivered a lecture on “Innovative Packaging Design”. He informed the audience about the role of various factors like packaging structure, graphic design, brand name, trademark, logo, language, font size and color in customer’s decision of purchasing a product.
DrSadiqa Qureshi from Department of Home Science, demonstrated the method of food preservation through the preparation of pickles.
Dr Mohammad Lateef, Sr Assistant Professor in the Department of Animal Studies, Central University of Kashmir, deliberated on the importance of rearing ornamental and aquarium fish in Kashmir.
