Srinagar, Nov 6: A 12-year-old girl from north Kashmir’s Handwara has brought laurels to the UT by clinching the gold medal in the International Karate Championship held in Goa from November 5 to 6.
Hailing from Chogal, Handwara in the Kupwara district, Mehvish Rashid is a student of 8th standard in AIMS (School) Handwara, and is into karate for the last few years.
According to her coach Sensei Mujtaba Hussain, a total of 950 players from Nepal, Bangladesh and 21 Kashmir-based martial artists participated in the championship.
“Mehvish fought six bouts in the championship and defeated her opponent from Chhattisgarh in her final,” he said.
Talking to Rising Kashmir, Mehvish said, “I’m grateful to Almighty Allah who bestowed me with loving and supportive parents. I also thank my school administration for their consistent support. Without their assistance, it was not possible for me to achieve anything. I am grateful to all those who kept supporting and encouraging me whenever I faced criticism. I am overwhelmed after winning the gold medal that too in an international event.”
Meanwhile, the school administration said it is delighted over the success of Mehvish and extended heartfelt congratulations to her. It also extended gratitude to SKIA for organizing the international championship and providing an opportunity for students to prove their mettle in the field of sports.
The International Karate Championship was organized by Shotokan Karate Do Indian Association (SKIA) and was supported by Shotokan Karate World Association.
