Baramulla, May 25: The residents of Shumlaran Kandi in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have urged the district administration to take immediate steps to repair the severely damaged road that poses a significant threat to human lives, especially the school-going children.
The locals said the Chandoosa-Shumlaran road has sustained extensive damage as a result of recent heavy rainfall, rendering it perilous for commuters.
“A section of the road near a shrine in Shumlaran has caved in, which has created a hazardous slope, posing a potential danger to the vehicles passing through,” said Fayaz Ahmad, a social activist in the area.
He raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the road and cited potential dangers the students face.
Fayaz emphasised that the continuous problem of this damaged and unstable road poses a significant risk, especially to school-going children. He highlighted the extreme peril associated with using this road and stressed the urgent need for authorities to intervene promptly and order immediate repairs to ensure public safety.
The Kandi belt of the Baramulla district, encompassing Shumlaran, is known for its susceptibility to landslides. Other villages prone to landslides in the area include Rajpora, Thandakasi, Lateefabad, and adjoining villages.
The recent heavy rainfall resulted in damage to approximately 20 structures, causing significant losses for affected families in the Kandi belt.
Jahangeer Ahmad Khan, a resident of Shumlaran, expressed deep concern over the safety of students who rely on school buses for transportation. He said numerous school buses traverse this road, ferrying children to different schools. “The deteriorated condition of the road poses a grave threat to the safety of these students,” he said.
The locals of Shumlaran have appealed to the district administration to prioritise repairing the damaged road.
