Kupwara, Jan 26: Sub District Hospital (SDH) Kupwara on Friday successfully conducted the first-ever advanced laparoscopic surgery on a 60-year-old female patient.
The patient suffered from Triple Compartment prolapse, including Rectal Prolapse, uterine prolapse and cystocele, and was treated with laparoscopic ventral Mesh Rectopexy with Sacro Colpopexy.
“The patient reported to the OPD two weeks ago, with a complaint of prolapse of pelvic organs. She was evaluated and prepared for surgery, and laparoscopic ventral Mesh Rectopexy with Sacro Colpopexy was done,” Dr Aejaz Bhat, a senior doctor at the hospital told Rising Kashmir.
He said that for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir, such a procedure has been done at the sub-district and district hospital level in Jammu & Kashmir.
The surgical team was led by Dr Rayees Ahmad Dar (Consultant Colorectal, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon), Dr Sanjay and Dr Anil, while the anaesthesia team, consisting of Dr Farooq A Khan (Consultant Anesthesia), Dr Zaka, Dr Fayaz, Mr Ghulam Rasool Bhat and Mr Veer Pal Singh, ensured the patient’s comfort throughout the procedure, Dr Bhat added.
He said that under the guidance of HOD Surgery, Dr Arshid Hussain, the surgery marked a significant achievement for SDH Kupwara.
Medical Superintendent, SDH Kupwara, Mir Mohammad Shafi said, “This procedure is usually conducted only at renowned medical institutions like SKIMS Soura and SMHS hospital. It is a proud moment that we carried out it here.”
He congratulated the surgical team and thanked the Secretary of Health and the Director of Health for facilitating the availability of laparoscopic facilities at SDH Kupwara.
Senior members of the doctors’ fraternity in Kupwara, Dr Sheikh Iqbal and Ayjaz Ahmad congratulated the team and expressed hope for similar groundbreaking surgeries in the future to reduce external referrals.
