Srinagar, Jan. 28: After a prolonged dry spell , the fresh snowfall at several places across Kashmir Valley has brought cheer to tourists as well as those associated with the tourism sector. The stakeholders have pinned their hopes for tourism revival post snowfall in the Kashmir Valley.
Pertinently, the dry spell had not only affected the tourism industry but also impacted people directly or indirectly connected to it.
Tourists in Gulmarg expressed happiness, stating that snowfall at the ski resort was a delightful experience. The prolonged dry spell had disappointed visitors, particularly those who came to Kashmir, especially Gulmarg, to experience the snowfall.
Madhana from Delhi shared, “We’ve been in Kashmir for a week, eagerly waiting for snowfall. Thankfully, we saw live snowfall in Gulmarg, making our Kashmir visit memorable.”
Snow bikers in Gulmarg mentioned that the recent snowfall rejuvenated their spirits, as they had only been able to use snow bikes for two days this year, resulting in significant losses.
Manzoor Ahmad Lone, President of the Snow Bikes Association in Gulmarg, expressed hope, saying, “The fresh snowfall brings hope for all snow bikers. We anticipate being able to use our bikes tomorrow.”
The two-month-long dry spell is expected to not only impact the tourism sector but also have repercussions on agriculture and horticulture in the Kashmir Valley, according to experts.
Lone noted, “Compared to last year, we are three months late. Last year, we started snow biking in late November, but this year, we have only had two days of work due to the lack of snow. We need at least an 8-inch snowfall for snow bikes.”
Sledge operators shared similar stories of economic challenges, expressing disappointment over the lack of snowfall affecting their livelihoods. Bashir Ahmad, a local sledge operator, emotionally stated, “I have never seen this situation in Kashmir in the last 10 years. Many people make their livelihood through this work, and this year, all of them have suffered losses.
Despite the impact on tourism, the recent snowfall is expected to attract more tourists to the valley. The Meteorological Department predicts the possibility of light to moderate rain or snow in many places, with heavy snowfall in isolated higher reaches of the Kashmir Division between January 28th and 29th.
Meanwhile at Sonamarg, the famous tourist resort in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, a recent snowfall has breathed new life into the local tourism industry.
During the 40-day long “Chillai Kalan”, locals faced acute problems due to the scarcity of snow, leading to a significant downturn in the area’s tourism. Hotel owners in Sonamarg reported numerous booking cancellations, raising concerns about the economic impact on their businesses.
However, in last two days, there has been a noticeable surge in interest among tourists to visit Sonmarg. The fresh snowfall has transformed the landscape into an enchanting winter wonderland, attracting visitors from near and far.
Hotel owners and shopkeepers in Sonamarg are expressing satisfaction with this positive development. The renewed enthusiasm among tourists is not only boosting hotel bookings but also contributing to increased footfall in local shops and markets. The picturesque scenery, now covered in a pristine blanket of snow, has become a magnet for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
A family from Delhi, currently in Sonamarg, shared their joy, expressing happiness at witnessing the first snowfall after the prolonged dry spell. “We’ve been here for the last two days, and we are happy now,” they said.
The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) played a crucial role this year by organizing various winter sports activities, further contributing to the economic and tourism revival in Sonamarg. Authorities are optimistic that the picturesque charm of snow-covered Sonmarg will continue to draw visitors, providing a much-needed boost to the livelihoods of those dependent on the tourism industry.
