Srinagar, April 27: Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Dr Jitendera Singh Sunday said that the Government of India is considering new initiatives to combat terrorism in the Udhampur and Kathua districts of Jammu division.
Speaking to the media in Udhampur, Dr Singh, said that the initiatives were discussed in a closed-door meeting with security officials chaired by him. “We talked about a few new strategies and alternatives, which cannot be disclosed publicly at this stage,” Dr. Singh said.
He also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally reviewed the tragic incident in Pahalgam and is closely monitoring the situation. “The Prime Minister has already stated that the government will take appropriate action,” he said in reply to a query.
Dr. Singh acknowledged reports of terrorist activities in Udhampur and Kathua in the recent past, including suspicious movements. “I visited Kathua and held three meetings there with local officials,” he said.
Dr Singh also chaired a meeting with the elected representatives, DDC members, civil society leaders, industry and commerce officials, as well as security and civil administration personnel in Udhampur. “During this session, we explored new measures and strategies, which cannot be shared publicly at this time,” Dr. Singh said. He assured that any shortcomings would be addressed in the coming days.
“The good news is that the people in this region are united with the government in overcoming the challenges,” he said. Dr Singh also highlighted that the construction of halted infrastructure projects, such as transport routes, roads, bridges and tunnels, would be expedited, with security considerations being a top priority.
“These projects hold significant importance from a security standpoint,” he said. “Efforts to make the Udhampur airport operational soon.” Dr. Singh said that preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra were also discussed. “We need to remain vigilant as the Amarnath Yatra approaches and the necessary preparations have already been discussed,” he said.
Reassuring the public, Dr. Singh emphasised that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, there is no cause for panic or worry. “Udhampur is known for its exemplary patriotism and together with the people, the government will successfully overcome these challenges,” he said.
