Jammu, Mar 06: The Jammu and Kashmir government has revealed that 4.26 lakh metric tons of legacy waste has been treated so far across various districts as per the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016. The statement was made in response to a query by Mir Mohammad Fayaz in the Assembly regarding waste disposal in the Union Territory.
The government acknowledged that large volumes of legacy waste—waste accumulated over time—remain dumped at open landfill sites across J&K. However, bio-remediation efforts are underway to address the issue.
Currently, 33 Mechanical Segregation Machines are operational across J&K to process waste efficiently. In addition, the administration is in the process of procuring more machines as per the approved Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) plan, following proper procedures.
The government’s response highlights its ongoing efforts to modernize waste management infrastructure and tackle environmental concerns related to unscientific waste disposal in the region.
